Chill out, moms and dads
I missed Frontline's documentary on the internet and teenagers when it aired, but David Pogue just posted a great assessment of the situation that includes a link to watch the whole thing for free online. I find it very sad (and unfortunately, not surprising) that the editor in Pogue's story asked specifically for a more sensationalized slant. The fear surrounding kids on the internet is pretty much the same as the fear surrounding abductions and "talking to strangers" when I was a child two decades ago. In both cases, it's a matter of teaching kids common sense and helping them develop good judgment skills, not overreacting to a handful of horrifying and possibly overblown stories.

You are so right on this. I'm so tired of hearing about the dangers of the internet. Children are protected from danger, as always, by parents being the best parents they can be - not by everyone else censoring and limited content and access to the internet.
Sorry to hear about your break in. I was broken into in Jan 2003 - the guy kicked open my door and took a violin, some jewelry, and my birding binoculars. But he left my brand new laptop. Who knows? I moved out of the crappy apartments I was living in to some slightly less crappy apartments across town. Shrug. I really like having our black lab, although for protection purposes, I would pick a breed less prone to licking strangers instead of barking. :)
